Family Day Care Educator Duties

A Family Day Care Educator should:

Provide a range of activities and experiences that are designed to promote physical, social, emotional and intellectual development for each child

Supervise the activities of children in their care, ensuring their physical safety at all times

Support and guide children’s behaviour using positive strategies

Has regard to the family and cultural values, age, and physical and intellectual development and abilities of each child being educated and cared for

Maintain a safe and clean environment for children as the physical environment plays a critical role in keeping children safe; reducing the risk of unintentional injuries; contributing to their wellbeing, happiness, creativity and developing independence; and determining the quality of children’s learning and experiences

Ensure meals and snacks provided for children are varied and nutritionally adequate

Take reasonable steps to ensure that children’s needs for sleep and rest are met, having regard to each child’s age, development and needs

Foster the holistic development and wellbeing of each child

May Take children to and from school or preschool

Perform first aid in emergencies

Maintain records of children’s development within identified learning outcomes

Provide feedback to parents about their child/ren’s day

Maintain accurate attendance records

While there are many definitions of wellbeing, it is generally recognised as a complex interplay between physical, psychological, emotional, social and health factors as well as an individual’s culture and values. While you’re putting your energy into creating a positive mental health environment for children and young people, it’s also important to focus on the wellbeing of yourself by:

Maintain a good work life balance

Keep healthy eating habits

Exercise regularly

Find time to relax

Do regular heath checks

Get enough sleep

Find ways to balance work and life demands

Foster and maintain personal relationships

Find ways to manage your stress

Maintain your own interests outside of work

Know when to seek additional help

Educators with good wellbeing and mental health are critical to quality education and care and outcomes for children, families and communities. Research shows that mentally healthy workers are more productive and can perform at their best and flourish in all aspects of their life.

We encourage our educators to register with BEYOU, it is the national mental health in education initiative delivered by Beyond Blue, in collaboration with Early Childhood Australia and headspace. Be You equips educators to support the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people from birth to 18 years, providing an end-to-end approach for early learning services, primary schools, and secondary schools across Australia.
